Bedroom/ Before, After and a Contest!

Hound Hill Design starts a new project. After many years of a blue bedroom it was time for a much needed fresher look.

Interior design by Hound Hill Design.
Custom headboard, curtains, bedcover, pillows, furnishings and accessories all from Hound Hill Design custom department and our store. Please contact us for design consultation, product questions or to purchase @ 631.377.3165.

Ceiling fan and old vents are removed, and fresh coats of paint are put on. New dark wood wide planked floors would have been our first choice, but the wall to wall carpet had to stay.

Sketching the proposed headboard directly on the primed walls! We wanted to make sure the wonderful detailed curves and nailhead were going to show above the pillows.

A start for a new design scheme. As you will see, the room became much less busy than what is shown on this first board. The gorgeous, heavily textured hyacinth wallpaper was used in the hallway leading into the bedroom.

Completed new bedroom enveloped in cream linen making a much more serene, light feeling room. The side table will eventually be replaced when just the right piece comes along and a beautiful simple crystal chandelier is on its way.

Close up showing the rich color of the aubergine velvet European square pillows, the intricately patterned China Seas fabric used on the long pillow, and the lavender silk monogrammed boudoir pillow.

Again, showing you the bedroom before, and after completion of the project. Now, our contest question for all of you:

WHO SLEEPS HERE?

Analyze who this room was designed for - what personality would be happy here? If there are twenty or more comments coming in, the person closest to answering correctly wins something special shown in the room... so put your design minds to work!

  1. Well, I guess it could go a few ways if it's not a master bedroom. Perhaps a college-age daughter or a mother-in-law room. I love the new look! I liked the blue, too, but when you compare the two, the blue almost looks dated. Great job and I think the current side table fits right in until that perfect piece is found.

  2. Thank you Kathy for your comment and yes, the blue was definately very dated looking!

  3. I LOVE this room! It is so calm and serene and sophisticated! Also, I am a recovering purple person, and you have included just enough in this room. Is that eggplant grasscloth you used? Where did you find that? Also, would you mind sharing your fabric sources, I love them! The shape of the headboard is beautiful and gracious in its curve. You did a beautiful job- I'm sure the homeowners were pleased! How could they not be; I'd move in in a heartbeat!! Great job...

  4. oops, I forgot to guess who the room was designed for. Perhaps a guest room or an older daughter who was ready for a more sophisticated look?

  6. WOW! What a change, and so beautiful! I love so much about this room - the headboard: OMG! What a gorgeous statement!!! Hmmm, ok - so analyzing the space, I'd say it was designed for a chic and sophisticated woman; either calm and collected by nature, or in a fast paced lifestyle or work environment that would leave her longing for a calm and serene space to find that calm and collected side of her. I would be willing to bet that she owns very feminine clothing, dresses, skirts, and that her wardrobe is made up of those things almost exclusively. She appreciates softness, and graceful lines. I don't think she's afraid of color, and once she finds the perfect fabric, she'll find somewhere to use it! Now, if I had to give this chic and sophisticated gal a name, I'd be willing to guess that her name is Nancy. ;) Please please please tell me I'm super close! :) Such a great make over and such a fantastic space!

  7. I love blue and so I loved your blue room. I think design is not about date, but about what you love. Your new room is lovely as well.

  8. The makeover is wonderful! (I confess my guest room is that blue, and yes is dated...the shoemaker's children etc etc!)...I love the linen wrapping the walls, so soothing! The room is for a busy sophisticated woman who needs serenity at home, a sanctuary to unwind and exhale....her name is Courtney! am I close??

    great post!

  9. I'm guessing due to the lack of personal objects this is a guest room. I like the addition of the floor lamp by the chair.

  10. I can see why you are so inspired to blog about this beautiful room! The walls are a lovley color...is that F&B Elephant Breath? Where did you find that beautiful purple pillow ? Is that an "N", for Nancy? Is that queen size bed? How much fabric did you use for that lovley bedspread? Would you be willing to share the fabric house? It drapes so nicley.

  11. What have you done with the pieces from your old room? Are the prints for sale? What size are the drapes? Looking forward to your post.
    Love your blog!!!

  13. I would say this is a room for those times when a grown child (a daughter) returns home to visit. I love the headboard and the bed linens.

The original room was lovely also. I don't think the color blue dated it. We are just bombarded these days with light and airy--and it is a nice change.

  14. Thank you Susan for leaving your comments. As an interior designer and store owner I was very interested to hear your opinion about the blue room and I seem to detect a slight preference veering towards color again as opposed to the neutral rooms. Pity this is not a better photo as the deep, rich purple augergine color on the back pillows is so lovely! My store is still based on whites, neutrals, and greys but always has color thrown in. I am sure we will see a return to color shortly - but for right now it is still the serene neutrals that speak to me.
Thanks for stopping by - love to hear the opinions from all of you...

  16. I liked both rooms. The blue room seemed more playful while the new room is more serene. I imagine this is a room for someone who deals with a lot of stress and wants serenity at the end of the day. She also like to read or work in bed and the padded headboard is both elegant and functional. She likes a feminine touch but not over the top girlie. The bed cover is easy to make in the morning and yet still lokks put together.

Very practical yet feminie, serene and luxurious.

  17. Hmmmm. I have to agree with Niartist. It could very well be a quiet enclave for a guest or for you Nancy. Either way I love it! I can almost smell the breeze blowing in across those privets!
I see you had a nice visit over at Nest. She is wonderful & so are you!

  21. * What a wonderful blog~~~I've been enjoying back-reading here tonight so very much!

BOTH spaces are yummy, & yet there is a clearly defined difference between them (if decorated by the same D/D, too).

I suspect pic #1 is your "first" go-'round w/ this space as a guest room (when you FIRST moved in). It's delightfully FRESH & "perfectly The Hamptons", in every way...

IMHO tho, you NOW wish to enjoy even MORE design "freedom" & individuality, & to encourage OTHERS to open their eyes & witness the beauty of "other" approaches available... There's so much MORE terriffic "independence" in pic #2... more self-assuredness that Y*O*U know it's "just right", without having your name "shouting it out".

    It's subtle. It's simple. It's honest & it's real. It's quite lovely, and I LIKE it~ ALOT !!!

    Warm regards,
